SYDNEY MELBOURNE

Agathon Galleries specialises in sourcing and exhibiting museum quality Aboriginal art from the Central Desert and other regions and urban centres of Australia. With a major gallery presence in both Melbourne and Sydney we curate 8 major exhibitions for each city. We are also actively involved in curating collections for private and corporate clients both locally and internationally.

Our specialist area is the remote Western Australian community of Irrunytju which is located in the center of the continent, close to the tri-state borders of Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Director of Agathon Galleries, John Ioannou, is the business advisor to Irrunytju which is a community owned and governed art centre. The Gallery represents some 30 artists from this community, the neighboring community of Wanarn and other centres.

Artists represented include Alkuwarri Dawson, Angampa Martin, Anmanari Brown, Eileen Stevens, Helen McCarthy (Telstra and Torres Strait Islander People's Choice Winner 2007),  Ivy Laidlaw, Tjayanka Woods, Jean Burke, Cynthia Burke, Jorna Newberry, Karrika Belle Davidson, Bernard Newberry, Kuntjil Cooper, Myra Cook, Simon Hogan, Patju Presley, Roma Butler, Jayaku Bilgiba, Tjayanka Woods, Tjuruparu Watson, Wingu Tingima and Tommy Watson.

Tommy Watson's work was chosen for permanent exhibition in the Musee du Quay Branly in Paris in 2007. Watson was one of six Indigenous Australian artists whose work was incorporated into the architectural structure of the museum. Watson's painting Wipu Rockhole will be on permanent display as a focal point of the museum's design, embedded in the ceiling.
